GREENLand – Twinning Microplastic-free Environment, a Horizon Europe project (Jan 2023 – Dec 2025, ID: 101079267)  is an innovative strategy for transforming to a digital Cloud-Based System with the education of staff for research of microplastics in soil, water, and microorganisms, as well as networking with the excellent institutions and stakeholders who are interested in the results of scientific research.

The essence of GREENLand is to change the system in which a great contribution will be made to the planet without plastic by working on preventive measures, innovations, and a plan for remediation. Trained professional staff will be able to be more efficient with the help of new digital tools, which will result in the establishment of strong cooperation with institutions and industry.

GREENLand will benefit EU citizens and beyond because the baseline of the project is the creation of a microplastics-free environment and food for the future with the objective to reach zero-microplastics pollution and zero-hungry goals in an eco-friendly environment.

ECONUTRI is an EU funded, Horizon Europe project which aims to optimize validate and demonstrate at commercial level nutrient management technologies that minimize or even eliminate nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution by limiting N emissions to soil, water and air and P emissions to water resources. Such a challenge follows the EU’s Green Deal having as a target to reduce fertilizer use by at least 20% by 2030, thereby reducing 50%the losses of nutrients to the benefit of the farmers and the environment. ECONUTRI is partnering with six Chinese institutions to complement activities between the EU and China and strengthen scientific and technological ties.
PUREEF-Y “Past, present, and future status and mitigation for Cyprus shallow-water reef biodiversity and functioning under global change” is a Horizon Europe Twinning project (July 2024 – June 2027) that aims to strengthen research capacities in Cyprus, focusing on the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic stressors, including marine pollutants such as microplastics, on marine ecosystems and biodiversity in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Through collaboration with leading partners from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) will build capacities to assess: (1) physicochemical parameters in sediments and waters affected by climate change and ocean acidification; (2) marine pollution levels, focusing on microplastics analysis of coastal sediments and waters at key sites around Cyprus, as well as heavy metal analysis; and (3) the health of ecologically important shallow benthic and planktonic habitats. The collected data will feed into experiments designed to evaluate habitat functions and metabolic roles of native and alien species under both normal and stressor-driven conditions. Findings will support the development of monitoring, conservation, restoration, and policy measures.

MiCoS, an ERC-funded research proposal (May 2023 – April 2028) studies the effects of micro- and nanoplastics on soil and plant health. THe project moves from risk assessment, to risk analysis and eventually risk reduction. A cost efficient, relatively fast extraction and visualization procedure for microplastics out of soil has been developed. This method is currently used to measure the microplastic concentration in 240 agricultural fields in Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg. Furthermore, pot trials will be designed to study the effect on plant (biomass, disease resistance) and soil (differences in microbial community and diversity) health by microplastics. Eventually we aim to reduce current pollution levels by actively screening for plastic degrading organisms.

MINAGRIS is an EU Horizon project (2021-6) exploring the impact of micro- and nanoplastics in agricultural soils, specifically soil biodiversity, plant productivity, and ecosystem services and their transport and degradation in the environment.
The project uses a collaborative approach to raise awareness, reduce contamination, and promote sustainable plastic use, ultimately enhancing Europe’s food systems.
We will provide tools and recommendations for the sustainable use of plastic in agriculture at the farm and field levels for ensuring safe and economically viable food systems in Europe.
