World Environment Day 2025

World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th since 1973, stands as the United Nations’ flagship event to raise awareness and drive action for the protection of our planet. In 2025, this global observance takes on increased urgency with a focused theme addressing one of the most present environmental threats: plastic pollution. Plastic pollution is so widespread that microplastics have been found in the air, water, soil and even inside our bodies. As countries prepare to negotiate a global treaty to end plastic pollution, collective action from individuals, industries, and governments is highly appreciated.
2025 Focus: Plastic Pollution
The official theme for World Environment Day 2025 spotlights the actual scientific evidence on the impacts of plastic pollution on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. It calls for a comprehensive approach centered on the “4Rs” — refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle — alongside rethinking how plastics are produced and consumed worldwide. This theme reinforces the global commitment made in 2022 to end plastic pollution through an international plastic pollution treaty, emphasizing collective responsibility and policy innovation to restrict plastic waste at its source.
The Environmental Challenge of Plastic Pollution
Initially embraced for its ability to preserve wildlife and revolutionize daily life, plastic has transitioned from a novel innovation in the 19th century to an indispensable, globally embedded material. Its unparalleled properties—affordability, efficiency, and resistance to corrosion—led to exponential production growth, reaching 400 million tons in 2022 and shaping industries from automotive to packaging. However, this convenience came at a cost: the vast, often irresponsible, application of fossil fuel-derived plastics has led to widespread environmental “plasticization,” with micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) infiltrating every ecosystem and significantly increasing our carbon and health footprints globally.

Global Call to Action
World Environment Day 2025 calls individuals, communities, governments, and businesses to unite in transformative action. Key initiatives expected include:
- Mass tree-planting and reforestation campaigns to restore degraded ecosystems and enhance carbon sequestration.
- Community-led waste reduction and recycling drives promote circular economy principles.
- Policy dialogues and international conferences focusing on sustainable plastic management and climate resilience.
- Educational programs raising awareness about plastic’s environmental footprint and sustainable alternatives.
InPlasTwin: Advancing Science to Combat Plastic Pollution in Agriculture
InPlasTwin brings together six European partners, including the Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia) and the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece), collaborating with leading institutions across Europe to strengthen research capacity and share knowledge on micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in agriculture. In this context, the InPlasTwin is focused on understanding and mitigating plastic pollution’s environmental and food safety impacts, with a special focus on strawberry cultivation.
Strawberries, a common fruit worldwide, are grown extensively using biodegradable plastic mulching films. While these films are designed to reduce plastic waste, they can break down into MNPs through photo-oxidation and mechanical abrasion, releasing MNPs and toxic additives into the soil. The project simulates real-world farming conditions to analyze how MNPs from mulching films are absorbed by strawberry plants, assessing impacts on crop yield, fruit quality, and food safety.
By elucidating these mechanisms, InPlasTwin supports the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices that minimize plastic pollution’s harmful effects. The project’s findings will inform farmers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, promoting alternatives to conventional plastic mulching and encouraging systemic change in agricultural plastic use.
Conclusion
World Environment Day 2025 is envisaged to confront the plastic pollution crisis and broader environmental challenges. By embracing sustainable consumption, supporting global treaties, and fostering innovation, humanity can protect biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and ensure a healthier planet for future generations. The day serves as a powerful reminder that environmental protection requires ongoing commitment beyond a single day.
As Mahatma Gandhi wisely stated, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.” Let World Environment Day 2025 inspire us all to rethink our relationship with plastics and the environment, forging a sustainable path forward.
